Glitter-heavy pop star tells MTV News she's going for 'balls-out, irreverent rock and roll.'
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias
Ke$ha's already got the face paint down pat, and, during recent live sets, she's even taken to guzzling blood out of a human heart, so it should come as no surprise that, on her upcoming album, the pop star is taking things back to the most theatrical era of rock: the prop-heavy, arena-spanning heyday of the 1970s. Ke$h revealed her plans over the weekend in Los Angeles, on the red carpet of KIIS FM's annual Wango Tango concert, where she told MTV News that the follow-up to her breakout Animal album (and, we suppose, Cannibal too) would be heavy on hard riffs and light on pretty much everything else.
"The next album ... I've been working on writing on the road, but as far as a sound, I just know it's gonna be balls-out, irreverent rock and roll," she said. "I've been pretty much in this '70s rock and roll kick and I just want to capture some of the true essence of what rock and roll is, and that's just irreverence and sexiness and fun and not giving a f---, so we'll definitely put a bit of rock and roll in it." So, does that mean that fans can expect the likes of Alice Cooper or Peter Frampton to show up on her new album? Perhaps. Because while Ke$ha's new album is still a ways off, she's already begun calling in favors, hoping to line up a killer collabo for the new disc. "I'm trying, trust me," she laughed. "I really would love to connect with one of my idols, I mean, that's my dream. I'm working on it." What do you think of Ke$ha going rock for her next album? Tell us in the comments!

Meanwhile, Paula Abdul has been absent from the set since her final group was eliminated last week.

MTV News' own Jim Cantiello is exclusively covering "The X Factor" rehearsals. Read on for his fly-on-the-wall backstage report! LOS ANGELES — "The X Factor" top seven are back on the lot after their first (and only) mini-vacation of the season. And as the Thanksgiving tryptophan wears off, the anxiety of another double elimination is setting in.
Adding to the stress? "The X Factor" is tackling the songs of Michael Jackson on Wednesday night (November 30), on the 29th anniversary of Thriller's release, no less. One of the contestants is so stressed over the theme he's emerged as a total perfectionist. During Monday's rehearsals, he had already nixed multiple arrangements the show had provided him. "This is the most unprepared I've felt on a Monday," he said to his mentor as they rushed out of Stage 36. There was a camera crew chasing them to capture the drama — as well as the ensuing late-night emergency meeting with the vocal coaches — so don't be surprised if some of this intense footage ends up in your living room. (This afternoon's dress rehearsal went swimmingly, for the record.) Meanwhile, one contestant had a full-on battle with his/her mentor over a chair. The mentor said, "Sit and sing." The contestant said, "Again?! How about I do something on my feet for Michael Jackson week?" Another mentor came to the defense of the contestant. In the end, the contestant is sitting after all. Don't worry, contestant. The eerie arrangement of an MJ classic is what folks are going to be buzzing about. No one will care if you sit or stand. In the control room, I spied one of the bigwigs utter the word "brilliant!" after the contestant's dress rehearsal. Another hot topic: wardrobe! When paying homage to one of the biggest music icons ever, it's tempting for the stylists to include clothing nods to Michael's various looks. But several singers are worried they'll look too much like Jackson impersonators, which has caused many a headache in the wardrobe trailer. But stylist June Ambrose is still able to keep things light in the midst of the drama. While waiting around for a contestant's last-minute fitting, she started an impromptu MJ dance party on the lot. Crotch grabs and "woo" included! Lastly, Paula Abdul's sunny energy has been noticeably absent on the CBS lot now that all her groups have been eliminated. She went from being the most hands-on mentor to an on-set ghost. "The X Factor" family can't wait to welcome her back for her first live show as strictly a judge. What do you think she's been doing with her newfound free time? You can catch Jim on the "X Factor Pepsi Pre-Show," streaming at 7 p.m. ET tonight on TheXFactorUSA.com!

Man, I'm so irritated.
I just received four pets tags that I ordered for Bev and Mary Margaret (two for Brooklyn and two for LA) and they're all messed up. Not only did they leave off the "Margaret" on Mary Margaret's tags, but the text isn't centered correctly and runs off the right side on all four of them. (The last letter of the address is cut in half.) The tags themselves are also ugly. The edges aren't smoothed out... they look like someone just cut them from a piece of sheet metal and called it a day.
So anyway, I got them this morning on my way to Starbucks (yesterday's mail), so while I was there, I started drafting a strongly-worded letter in my head, like what I was going to say to these people when I sent them back.
And then I saw it.
In tiny print on the bottom of the invoice it said, "Our handicapped employees appreciate your order."
So now I can't send them back. If I did I'd be a total asshole.
I'm just going to order new ones from someplace else. Any recommendations?

Glam rocker tackled the legendary 1970 Led Zeppelin song for 'American Idol' rock night.

Imagine a freight train speeding toward you at midnight. Or a rockslide barreling down a hill as you try to outrace it. That's the feeling of the ominous, chugging Jimmy Page riff that kicks off
The legendary British rock act recorded the tribute to Chicago blues icon Willie Dixon during their second U.S. tour after working it out in their live show, including it on their 1969 classic album Led Zeppelin II. Like many of the songs Zeppelin performed early in their career, "Love" was a blues standard turned on its head with a heavy dose of crunching psychedelic guitar and thundering drums, courtesy of late drummer John Bonham. The song was based on a 1962 tune by another blues forefather, Muddy Waters, called "You Need Love," which was penned by Dixon. For Zeppelin's version, Plant customized the lyrics by adding some lyrical quotes from a few other songs Dixon wrote for Howlin' Wolf, "Back Door Man" and "Shake For Me," nailing the tricky vocal in a single take. It was also inspired by 1966's "You Need Loving" from the British rock group the Small Faces, for whom Zeppelin had great affection, but they also did not credit Dixon for his part in writing the original lyrics. The song became Zeppelin's first U.S. single and their only U.S. top 10 hit. Though their manager would not let them release singles in the U.K. because he thought it cannibalized album sales, the song was finally released as the band's only British single in 1997. Dixon sued Zeppelin over the song in 1985, claiming it borrowed too heavily from his "You Need Love," and Zeppelin reached an agreement with him, with Dixon using the money he received to set up a program that provided musical instruments for schools. A cornerstone of heavy rock, the tune -- which was the theme song for the long-running British countdown show "Top of the Pops" in the 1970s and '80s -- has been covered by dozens of artists over the years, from Tina Turner and Ben Harper to Prince, Slash, Leona Lewis, Train's Pat Monahan, the London Symphony Orchestra and Jane's Addiction. It?s been five years since she landed her dream job on ?Wizards of Waverly Place,? and Selena Gomez recently revealed how she spent her very first paycheck.
The teen star, whose roots remain grounded, told, "I think [my first paycheck] went into living [in Los Angeles] because we had to move from Texas, so I think we just had to pay for it.?
Although she has more than enough to spend now, Gomez went on to say that she?s never been a big spender, admitting that her only splurge was a modest $34,000 Ford Escape she got for her 16th birthday.
Additionally, the brunette beauty has been known for her low key lifestyle and budget friendly purchases like when she was once spotted wearing a $23 dress from Forever 21 on the red carpet.

It's a merry Christmas for all of Lady Gaga's Little Monsters. Mother Monster herself played Santa to all her fans when she presented them with an unreleased song at midnight on Christmas Day.
"Been racking my brain on what to get Little Monsters for Christmas!! I finally figured it out!!" Gaga tweeted on December 22. "On Christmas Day I will leak to you an unreleased Song off Born This Way! It was recorded live, in one take, on the tour bus. Uncensored." "Stuck on F***in You," which was recorded on the road in Minnesota during her Monster Ball tour, captures the feeling of a late-night jam session, where Gaga's voice soars over just a guitar and drum machine. It's a stripped down, bluesy joint that showcases her humor and flair for improvisation. "We were all wasted on the bus making records," Gaga tweeted Saturday (December 24) night, "It's such a timecapsule of the spirit of our creativity. I wrote, sang and freestyled the last minute + half of the song." Gaga is spending at least part of her holidays abroad. "Well, I'll be in Japan right up until Christmas Day," Gaga told MTV News earlier this month. "So I'll be eating with all my Japanese Little Monsters. I like shabu shabu [a form of Japanese hot pot]." Lady Gaga, who was MTV News' Top Newsmaker of 2011, will be ringing in the new year in her hometown of New York. The "Marry the Night" singer, along with Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj, LMFAO and Florence and the Machine, will watch the ball drop at the 40th annual "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve." The event will be hosted by Ryan Seacrest, with appearances by Fergie and Jenny McCarthy.

Bieber named Google's Most Popular Person of 2011, while 'Born This Way' tops Fastest Rising Songs chart.

Let this serve as undeniable proof that, regardless of search engine, Justin Bieber truly dominates the Interwebs. Having already been named Bing's most-searched person of 2011, on Thursday (December 15) Bieber picked up another e-honor, as Google unveiled its annual Zeitgeist site and, in the process, declared him its Most Popular Person of the year, besting Kim Kardashian and Lady Gaga to take home the title. Nicki Minaj and, uh, Casey Anthony rounded out the top 5. It's a fitting way to cap off a year that saw Bieber beat Gaga in the race to 2 billion YouTube views, though perhaps the Mother Monster can take solace in the fact that "Born This Way" topped Google's Fastest-Rising Song search list, ahead of "Watch the Throne" (which, you know, isn't actually a song) and Blake Shelton's "Honey Bee." Of course, not even Bieber could best Rebecca Black on Google's Fastest Rising Searches, as the "Friday" sensation topped the list — which tallied worldwide searches — ahead of Google Plus, Ryan Dunn, Casey Anthony and "Battlefield 3." Breakout star Adele also made huge headways this year, landing at #7 on the list and beating out Steve Jobs and the iPad 2. Not surprisingly, Black also came in atop the Fastest-Rising People list, besting "American Idol" champ Scotty McCreery and teenage bride/ pumpkin-patch enthusiast Courtney Stodden. But when it came to the year's most-searched images, well, neither Bieber nor Black made the cut. Instead, folks were seeking pics of Charlie Sheen above all else, followed by "Planking," "Kim Kardashian wedding" and a trio of hair-raising (or perhaps razing) queries: "Tom Brady Haircut," "Selena Gomez Haircut" and "Emma Watson Haircut."

Despite feeling a little under the weather, Justin Bieber performed for President Obama and his family at the 30th annual Christmas in Washington concert on Sunday, the Press Association reports. The show, which benefits the Children's National Medical Center, also featured performances by Jennifer Hudson, the Band Perry, "Victorious" star Victoria Justice and Cee Lo Green.
According to Aceshowbiz.com, Bieber performed his track "Mistletoe" — off his holiday album, Under the Mistletoe — during the annual event. This marks the second time the teen star has appeared on the show. He performed two years ago. "Waking up with a bad cold ... weather change. but will be ready tonight for CHRISTMAS in WASHINGTON. #resting," he tweeted in the hours leading up to the show, later adding, "Feeling good. Just had some fun at rehearsals and now we r ready. Time to sing for the President. #canadianrepresenter. Seeing the fans ... being here again 2 years later. Feeling very #blessed and #grateful. Thank U! Great night! President Obama is one cool Prez. He told me he was 'chillin.' #PresidentialSWAG." During the event, a number of Christmas classics like "This Christmas," "Silent Night," "Let It Snow" and "I'll Be Home for Christmas" were performed. The night ended with all of the performers, as well as the Obamas and host Conan O'Brien, taking the stage for "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing." While the night was all about the holidays, O'Brien did manage to poke a little fun at Bieber during the show. "It's especially exciting to be here during this joyous season, when we celebrate the arrival of a miracle child, worshiped by millions around the world," he said. "Of course I'm talking about Justin Bieber." The full concert is set to air Friday on TNT.

Conrad Murray asks judge for a court-appointed attorney to appeal his involuntary manslaughter conviction.
By Gil Kaufman
Dr. Conrad Murray arrives for his arraignment of at the Airport Los Angeles Courthouse today
Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images
Just weeks after being sent to jail for four years following a conviction on a felony involuntary manslaughter charge in the death of Michael Jackson, cardiologist Conrad Murray is throwing himself on the mercy of the court. The doctor had been slated to earn up to $150,000 a month to act as Jackson's personal physician before the pop icon's death in June 2009 from an overdose of the Murray-administered surgical anesthetic propofol. But on Tuesday E! News reported that Murray filed a notice of appeal in Los Angeles Superior Court in which he claimed that he is "indigent and respectfully requests the appointment of counsel on appeal." Murray, 58, is planning to appeal both his conviction and his sentence, but has not yet filed papers with the California Appeals Court. He had hired two lawyers to handle his manslaughter case, but is now seeking attorneys with appeal experience. One of those former lawyers, J. Michael Flanagan, told E! that he was shocked at how his client is being treated in jail. "It is crazy and unbelievable how [the sheriffs] are treating" Murray in jail, said Flanagan, who claimed he waited over an hour to see Murray, who was brought out in handcuffs and leg chains. Flanagan was further shocked to see Murray handcuffed to the table for their meeting, something the lawyer said he'd never seen before in the case of a low-level, non-violent offender. Charles Peckham, who is handling civil cases against Murray, told the Associated Press that his client is under tight security and isolation that is more intense than other inmates at the Los Angeles Men's Central Jail. "Treating him like Hannibal Lecter is offensive," said Peckham. "This man who saved lives made a mistake, and they're going to [make] him pay like a mass-murderer." Sheriff's officials defended the tight security, saying it was for Murray's safety.

Go see Captain America this weekend! Support our Colin!
I went to the premiere on Tuesday and it was the coolest thing ever. First, the movie is AMAZING and Chris Evans is a superstar. Second, there were so many damn people there it was insane. I have been to movie premieres in New York before and they were nothing like this. I mean, they closed down Hollywood Boulevard. I would've taken photos to show you, but the invite said to leave phones in the car. But here's a photo of me in my cool Captain America 3D glasses:
(Sit down, stop jumping around, it's an awesome picture, I know. And the quality is amazing. It's not grainy or reddish... it's perfect.) (No, it's not.)
(And you can totally see the Captain America logo on the side of the glasses.) (No, you can't.)
Anyway, Captain America is pulling a strong 71% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes right now so GO SEE IT! IT'S FANTASTIC!
