Bobby Brown Didn't Get Whitney Houston 'Addicted' To Drugs

'I'm not the reason she's gone,' singer's ex-husband tells Matt Lauer in upcoming 'Today' show chat.

Their relationship may have been tumultuous and their struggles with substance abuse well-documented, but Bobby Brown insists that he is not the reason ex-wife Whitney Houston started doing drugs, a habit that she battled right up until her death in February.

"I'm not the one that got Whitney on drugs, at all," Brown told "Today" host Matt Lauer in an interview set to air on Wednesday and Thursday. "I'm not the reason she's gone."

Brown admitted that when he learned of his ex's death, he was saddened to hear she had started using cocaine again.

"I was hurt ... because, you know, me being off of narcotics for the last seven years — I felt that she was, you know, I didn't know she was struggling with it still. But at the same time, you know — listen, it's a hard fight," he said.

Regarding his involvement in Houston's drug use, Brown said that drugs were a part of Houston's life before they met in 1991. "I smoked weed, I drank the beer, but no, I wasn't the one that got Whitney on drugs at all," he insisted. "It's just, it's just unexplainable, how one could [say that I] got her addicted to drugs. I'm not the reason she's gone."

The New Edition member said that Houston seemed to have "a glow about her" the last time he saw her over dinner at a restaurant with their daughter, Bobbi Kristina, which was about a week before she died.

"She just looked like she was in a good place," he said.

Michael Jackson Lives On In 'Immortal' Tour

Cirque du Soleil show pays tribute to late icon with world tour.
By Uptin Saiidi

<P><B>NEWARK, New Jersey</B> &#8212; Music, dance and acrobatics combine in celebration of <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jackson_michael/artist.jhtml">Michael Jackson</a>'s iconic life in the "Immortal" World Tour. From trapeze artists to acrobats and even a world-champion pole dancer, guests at the Cirque du Soleil show can expect a high-energy tribute to the legend. </P><P> </P><P>The tour stopped for two nights in Newark, New Jersey, this past weekend (its 40th stop) and will open Tuesday night (April 3) at New York's Madison Square Garden, where it will remain through Thursday. From there, it will continue across North America through the summer before heading to Europe in the fall. </P><P> </P><P><center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:755805/cp~vid%3D755805%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A755805" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></center> </P><P> </P><P>Having already produced the <a href="http://www.cirquedusoleil.com/en/shows/love/default.aspx" target="_blank">Beatles "Love" show</a> in Las Vegas, Cirque is no stranger to musical tributes. </P><P> </P><P>"Immortal" serves as a sensory explosion that starts on the subdued side and progresses in both spectacle and energy. More than 60 artists perform to 32 songs in a presentation that feels much like a concert with an ensemble of circus-inspired acts elegantly melding together. The stage is two levels with a long peninsula extending into the audience, where the majority of the acrobatics takes place. MJ's famed choreographic style was present in nearly all the numbers, and the audacious task of the performers was well-received by the audience. </P><P> </P><P>The progression of the musical numbers moved seamlessly. The energy kicked into high gear with Jackson-like characters performing "Fanatics Medley" as Jackson 5 &#8212; one of them in MJ's signature fedora and another as a gold-suited mime. Jackson's youth was remembered in "Childhood" during which a recording of Jackson's voice referred to his early stardom as he sang, "Have you seen my childhood?/ It's been my fate to compensate/ For the childhood I've never known." </P><P> </P><P>While the moving screens, elaborate stage designs and detailed costumes were impressive, one of the most awe-inspiring moments was witnessing what the human body is capable of during the pole-dancing number. Felix Cane, a two-time world pole-dancing champion, maneuvered in the sky dancing on a pole &#8212; with no harness &#8212; appropriately performing to "Dangerous," as the audience was captivated by her every move. </P><P> </P><P>Another highlight was "Human Nature," during which the back screens were dominated by Neverland graphics and an image of a young Michael sitting on the moon. In front of the backdrop, a half-dozen artists wrapped in multicolored LED costumes soared through the air in sync, representing the constellations. </P><P> </P><P>"Beat It" got the crowd moving while they watched performers in MJ's signature accessories, including his famous glove and penny loafers, dance in dynamic movement. A rock-infused duel between an electric guitar and electric cello capped the song. </P><P> </P><P>After an elaborate performance to "Black or White," as the night seemed to be over and the audience slowly started spilling into the aisles, the lights illuminated one last time for an encore to "Man in the Mirror." The artists appeared to take a bow in front of exploding fireworks. </P><P> </P><P><i>Have you seen "Immortal"? Share your review below!</i></p>

Vanessa Hudgens & Austin Butler's Spiritual Sunday

Venturing out for a spiritual Sunday (April 29), Vanessa Hudgens joined Austin Butler for a midday service at the Ecclesia church on Hollywood Blvd.

With the "Sucker Punch" actress looking lovely in a yellow dress accessorized with a wishbone necklace, she and her beau stayed for around an hour and a half before hitting the exits.

As they left, Vanessa and Austin waved goodbye to their friends before making their way back to the car - during which time Miss Hudgens stopped to pick up a flower which she looked delighted to smell and show to her boyfriend.

Also hitting up IKEA later in the afternoon, the eventful day comes just after Austin saw in the release of his new movie "My Uncle Rafael" this past Friday (April 27).

The Marc Fusco directed comedy is about "a desperate TV producer who convinces an old Armenian Uncle to star in a new reality show. Cultures collide when Uncle Rafael is thrown into the Schumacher family household where he has one week to save a broken and dysfunctional American family from falling apart. The only rule-everyone must follow his rules."

With a Little Luck: A Novel

My good friend Caprice Crane's new book, With a Little Luck, is out today. Yay, Caprice!

It's gotten great reviews:

"Crane is one of the funniest writers of popular fiction around. The dialog (inner and outer) is laugh-out-loud, snort-inducing hilarious . . . Readers will want to cross their fingers and spit while throwing salt over their shoulders if it helps Berry reach her dreams. Highly recommended."

Library Journal

"Fans of Stacy Ballis and Cara Lockwood will appreciate Crane's effortlessly funny style, which is often attempted in popular fiction but is rarely this well executed...Lighthearted and charmingly honest."

—Booklist

"[A] satisfying romantic comedy...[with] real character growth."

—Kirkus Reviews

And even better blurbs:

"Romantic, poignant and funny—this book is a lucky find for lit fans. Caprice Crane is a nimble and gifted storyteller."

—Diablo Cody, Academy Award-winning screenwriter of Juno

"A hilarious romp that oozes charm and giddy fun. Caprice Crane is a true talent."

—Molly Jong-Fast, author of The Social Climber's Handbook

"Witty, fast-paced, and sheer fun. Caprice Crane is a master of dialogue. Half the time I was reading this book I was smiling, which made me look like a crazy person on the subway."

—Jancee Dunn, author of Don’t You Forget About Me and Why Is My Mother Getting a Tattoo?

"Absolutely charming and hilarious."

—Missy Peregrym, star of the movie Stick It and ABC's Rookie Blue

"With a Little Luck scores in humor, head, and heart. In other words, it’s a perfect trifecta."

—Karyn Bosnak, author of 20 Times a Lady (soon to be the major motion picture What's Your Number?)

(Omg, who is that last fantastic blurber?) (I meant every word of it.)

And most importantly, she has the cutest dog ever (who likes to video chat with Bev):

Anyway, check it out, buy it—it's fantastic!

Judd Apatow's 'This Is 40' Trailer: Five Key Scenes

Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd are back as Debbie and Pete, picking up in their marriage where they left off in "Knocked Up."
By Fallon Prinzivalli

Melissa McCarthy and Paul Rudd in "This is 40"
Photo: Universal Pictures

Ever wonder what happened to Alison's sister and brother-in-law from "Knocked Up"? The dynamic duo of Debbie (Leslie Mann) and Pete (Paul Rudd) had a few key scenes in the film, including Debbie taking Alison (Katherine Heigl) to the club where she meets Seth Rogen's character.

Now Judd Apatow aims to brings us back into the lives of the couple as Debbie celebrates her 40th birthday in "This Is 40." Continually lying about her age as she refuses to accept it, Debbie wonders if she's living the best life possible and decides she and Pete need to make some changes.

"I've made a list," she tells her husband in a scene from the trailer, which was released on Friday (April 27). "It's the 'do-better' list. We're 40 years old, if we don't do it now, when are we going to do it?"

Read on for more on five key scenes from the clip!

Counting the Rings
At the gynecologist's office, the nurses try to figure out if Debbie was born in 1972, '74 or '75 since her paperwork lists a range of dates of birth. When Debbie finally blurts out, "I lie about my age, OK? OK?" her gynecologist responds, "I know how old you are. I'm counting the rings." And with that line, we know typical Apatow humor will be on display in this flick. After that exchange, Debbie decides it's time for a change and makes a list of the top three things she and her husband need to focus on now that they're in their 40s: exercise, the kids' education and being patient.

Exercise Every Day
In one scene, Debbie works with a personal trainer, which allows the filmmakers to bring back Jason Segel's "Knocked Up" character, also named Jason. "I can turn your body into a boner machine," he tells Debbie. When she points out that every woman gives him a boner, he replies, "Don't sell yourself short," before adding in a whisper, "Barb doesn't give me a boner." Looks like Jason's crush on Alison's sister never went away.

Get Involved in School
As Pete confronts a mother whose son is picking on his daughter, "Bridesmaids" star Melissa McCarthy makes a cameo as the confrontational mommy. She tells Pete to get his daughter's meds right and Pete calls her son an animal. When Pete gives her shoulder a little shove, she screams, "You touched my nipple!" When he tells her he merely touched her below her shoulder, she replies, "I have very high nipples!" How Rudd kept from breaking into laughter during that scene is beyond us.

More Patience With the Kids
Another key scene opens with Pete and Debbie's daughters pulling each other's hair as they fight in the back seat of the car. It then cuts to them at the dinner table, where Debbie announces they're cutting back on the girls' gadget use so they'll spend more time outside. She suggests instead that they build a fort, to which the exasperated eldest daughter exclaims, "And do what in the fort?" When Debbie says, "You don't need technology," the youngest daughter holds an iPhone up to her mouth and says, "No technology," as a monkey on the screen mimics her words.

Payback Time
The final scene shows Pete spread-eagle on a bed, holding a mirror up to his crotch trying to look at ... something. (We honestly don't want to know what.) When he asks Debbie to take a look, she asks if they can just keep a small shred of mystery in their relationship. Pete replies, "I saw you have babies — payback time." At least being in your 40s isn't boring.

"This Is 40" is set to hit theaters Christmas 2012.

Usher To Preview Looking For Myself At Off-Broadway Show

Singer tells MTV News 'Fuerza Bruta' matches the 'more artistic' music on his upcoming album.
By Jocelyn Vena

Usher

This Saturday (and this Saturday only), Usher will appear in New York City's "Fuerza Bruta," an off-Broadway show where no one speaks, but the story is told through bright lights, music and dancing. In the lead role of Running Man, Usher will also use the show to preview his June album release, Looking for Myself.

Fans in the audience will likely get closer than they've ever been to the singer, as the audience stands during the performance, becoming another member of the company. With several weeks until his album release, Usher explained to MTV News at a rehearsal why he wanted to use this show to preview tracks.

"I felt like the natural elements as well as the emotion of 'Fuerza Bruta' would definitely speak or be significant to some of the stories and I guess hopefully a connection [was there]," he explained of tying this performance to his album. "When we began to explore different directions [for the performance like] maybe we use some of their music, maybe we use some of mine ... and before you knew it the idea came together. We tried it, I got on Running Man and it worked."

The show will stream his entire album, which drops June 12, and he thinks the mind-bending artistry of "Fuerza Bruta" works with the sound he's created on it. "This is more artistic of an album than I've had in history," he said. "And I felt like yeah, it would be a lot for me, but I was willing to at least try it. There were many times I had seen the show and I only hoped that I would be able to make it happen."

Waka Flocka Ready To 'Smash' Drake's Club Paradise Tour

'Why not put us all together? I salute him for that,' Flocka tells MTV News of Drizzy tapping new all-stars like French Montana and 2 Chainz.

Waka Flocka Flame is ready to hit the club.

On May 7, Waka, J. Cole, Meek Mill, 2 Chainz and French Montana will hit the road with Drake on the next leg of the Toronto rapper's ever-evolving Club Paradise tour.

"You know, the kings of the club gotta go to the club," Flocka told MTV News earlier this week at a Brooklyn, New York photo shoot. "They told me Club Paradise is the most popping-est club in the United States right now."

The 27-city run will kick off in Concord, California, and move through amphitheaters in Las Vegas, Houston, Chicago and New York.

"I want to go out on tour with the most exciting artists right now, and I want to make sure that I have songs with all of them," Drizzy said during a conference call for the press on Tuesday. "If we start getting into it and we start really vibing, maybe the last few nights, it's a collaboration show; maybe we do all of our songs onstage together."

Right now, there are few rap artists more exciting than the energetic Waka Flocka, whose latest single, "Round of Applause," has become a strip-club staple. "He's like, 'We the new era, we the new faces of rap, we the new generation,' " the Atlanta riot-starter said of a conversation he and Drake had. "So why not put us all together? I salute him for that. You know I'm about to smash that."

Though he's the headliner, Drake doesn't look at his tourmates as opening acts. Instead, he'll treat Club Paradise as if it were an all-star music experience similar to the popular Coachella or Bamboozle festivals.

"On this tour, I encourage people to get there early, because it's more [of] a festival vibe, if anything," he said. "It's one of those days that's it's going to start during the sunlight and the sun's going to drop, it's outdoors, it's summertime ... I want people to make it a day."

Aside from Drake, who are you most excited to see on the next leg of the Club Paradise Tour? Tell us in the comments!

The 20-year-old actress looked elegant in an ASOS Denim Shirt with Rare Crochet Lace Knickers and ASOS Mixed Frame Cat-Eye Sunglasses for the Jason Nocito shot front page while opening up about topics such as her penchant for dark roles and the criticism she received over her Oscars dress.

Highlights from Miss Woodley's interview are as follows. For more, be sure to pay a visit to ASOS!

On not paying attention to fame and fortune:
"I don't pay any attention to all of that stuff. I never have. I know nothing about the industry, nothing about the 'business' and I intend to always be that way. There are more options coming in for me [since The Descendants], but that really doesn't affect me, because I will never do a movie I'm not passionate about. I'd rather be in a two-minute scene in a phenomenal Meryl Streep movie than the lead of an action-hero film."

On her penchant for dark roles:
"Movies are where my heart is at. I love dark roles ? roles that appear scary. Not in a horror film way, but like 'Black Swan' or 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'. Films that take the audience on an emotional journey. And I would love to play Patti Smith in a film one day ? I'm re-reading her autobiography, I'm obsessed with it."

On criticism of her Valentino Coutore Oscars dress:
"A lot of people didn't like it. They were like, 'she's 20, she's covering herself up, why is she doing that?' But to me it felt classy and elegant and that's what I think of when I think of the Oscars. It felt simple and elegant and it still represented who I am. Most of my clothes come through friends ? this cardigan is two years old and these jeans are my friend's boyfriend's."

On what the future holds:
"I'm excited to become a bada** archer. I want to be able to shoot a small pen dot on the wall, 20 feet away. I want to be like [The Hunger Games'] Katniss."

Could Justin Bieber Perform With An Elvis Hologram?

The creators of Tupac's Coachella hologram reveal other artists they'd like to bring back to life: Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Michael Jackson.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P>The world can't seem to get enough of that <a href="/news/articles/1683173/tupac-hologram-coachella.jhtml">Tupac hologram from the Coachella festival</a>. The late rapper's lifelike image left fans in awe as it performed alongside Snoop Dogg during his set with Dr. Dre. </P><P> </P><P>The people behind the projection system that created the incredibly realistic likeness of the MC are now cooking up ideas of who else they might want to bring back to life. </P><P> </P><P>Speaking to <a href="http://www.nme.com/news/2pac/63453" target="_blank"><i>NME</i></a>, Sanj Surati, head of music at Musion Technology Ltd, explained that one of music's greats could one day perform alongside one of pop's biggest stars. Asked whether there were plans to bring back Elvis Presley and perhaps have him perform next to Justin Bieber, Surati said it "would be a cool thing." </P><P> </P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:757407/cp~vid%3D757407%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A757407" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed> </P><P> </P><P>If an Elvis/Bieber collabo can't shake out, Surati explained there are others he'd like to see come to life: "Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, oh, and Michael Jackson would be the ultimate one," he said. "Maybe even Whitney Houston." </P><P> </P><P>As for the future of the famous Tupac-ogram, well, Surati hopes it can be resurrected once again on a bigger-scale tour. "This is obviously a historic and exciting initiative that we're all witnessing currently, and it would make sense for them to bring it to Europe," he said. "And maybe take it to the rest of the world." </P><P> </P><P>Since the debut of the Tupac hologram, fans have been wondering what other beloved performers could find new life using this technology. 'Fifty Shades Of Grey': What's In It For 'Hunger Games' Fans?

As the E.L. James novel bumps the dystopian drama from the top of the bestseller list, we ask a few of Panem's faithful if fans should give it a read.
By Amy Wilkinson

Katniss Everdeen and her trusty bow and arrow can no longer fend off Christian Grey and his punishing whips — "Fifty Shades of Grey" has bumped "The Hunger Games" from its #1 perch on USA Today's bestseller list. And it's a contentious battle, to be sure. Seven of the top 10 are dominated by the various series installments by "Grey" author E.L. James and "Hunger Games" author Suzanne Collins.

It probably goes without saying that the content of these two sagas couldn't be more different: "The Hunger Games" is a teen novel chronicling a young heroine's fight for survival in a televised death match against 23 other kids, while "Fifty Shades of Grey" is an erotically charged page-turner detailing the sexcapades of a billionaire and his young paramour. Yet, both have managed to capture the attention of publishers, producers and pop-culture pundits.

While "The Hunger Games" was busy dominating the box office to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars, Universal Pictures and Focus Features (perhaps inspired by Lionsgate's success with the book-to-film adaptation) snatched up the film rights to James' buzzy novel for an undisclosed sum. A few weeks later, the English author was named to Time 's 100 Most Influential People in the World list.

Full disclosure: I've been hesitant to pick up "Fifty Shades of Grey" owning to its "Twilight" fanfic roots and "mommy porn" reputation, but as someone who writes about both books and films, I'll eventually need to become familiar with the life and times of Christian Grey — for purely professional reasons, of course. But is there anything in it for "Hunger Games" fans looking for another high-profile novel to devour? I asked a few of Panem's faithful.

"I haven't actually read 'Fifty Shades of Grey,' but I confess that way back in the day, when it was called 'Master of the Universe' and was posted for free online as 'Twilight' fan fiction, I did read it," said Hunger Games Examiner's Sara Gundell. "It is a dirty, dirty story — but hey, sometimes filthy fan fiction is fun to read. And while there is plenty of 'Hunger Games' fan fiction online (and plenty of it is also dirty), I'm not sure 'Fifty Shades of Grey' will appeal to most fans of 'The Hunger Games' based on what attracted them to that series. There isn't really any way to compare the two. They don't have similar themes, and the characters don't share any similar traits. They really are nothing alike. That doesn't mean some 'Hunger Games' fans won't enjoy it, but I can't see it having any sort of universal, crossover appeal. They just don't have anything in common, really."

For MTV News staffer Christina Garibaldi, the saucy series served as a palate cleanser after the death and destruction of the dystopian drama.

"As a reader of both 'The Hunger Games' and 'Fifty Shades of Grey,' I have to admit I'm a huge fan of both," she said. "Both stories have taken their audiences by storm, but keep in mind that 'Fifty Shades of Grey' does skew a little older and to women, while 'Hunger Games' seems to please both male and female readers. Yet, if you are anything like me and enjoy mixing up your reading between love stories and action novels, then pick up both books! You will not be disappointed."

Then there's The Hob's Megan Scott, who says she sees at least one (tongue firmly in cheek) similarity: hunger.

"I have been sucked into the 'Fifty Shades' vortex and am enjoying it immensely," she said. "Anything that is getting a lot of hype and is considered controversial I'll pick up. There really is nothing that really comes to mind that would intrigue an "HG" fan other than the common theme of hunger, but let's face it, Christian Grey's hunger is the different sort."

Consensus: While the two best-selling series share very little in common thematically, odds are in your favor that "Grey" may be as hard to put down as "The Hunger Games."

Lady Gaga Under Fire After 'PopStarsDontEat' Comment

Pop star's post-workout tweet criticized by eating-disorder association.
By John Mitchell

<P>What was clearly intended as a jokey tweet lamenting the rigorous diet and exercise routine she is currently undertaking to prepare for her 110-date Born This Way Ball has put <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml "> Lady Gaga</a> in the crosshairs of some angry fans and eating-disorder organizations. </P><P> </P><P>On Tuesday, the pop star <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga/status/189809689570189313" target="_blank">tweeted</a>, "Just killed back to back spin classes. Eating a salad dreaming of a cheeseburger #PopSingersDontEat #IWasBornThisWay." <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/11/popstarsdonteat-lady-gaga_n_1418722.html" target="_blank">Some fans </a> thought the tweet wasn't exactly keeping with the pop star's "You're perfect the way you are" message and that her choice of the "#PopStarsDontEat" hashtag could be misinterpreted as encouraging eating disorders because she posits herself as a role model to her fans. </P><P> </P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:717952/cp~vid%3D717952%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A717952" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed> </P><P> </P><P>The National Eating Disorder Association even weighed in, hitting its own <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/NEDAstaff/status/190133464509591552" target="_blank">Twitter account</a> to write, "Huh? This is the same person who recently implored girls to stop dieting?" </P><P> </P><P><b><i><a href="http://buzzworthy.mtv.com/2012/04/11/lady-gaga-pop-stars-dont-eat-tweet/">MTV Buzzworthy has an Open Letter To Lady Gaga</a></b></i> </P><P> </P><P>While it seems clear that Gaga was joking &#8212; who hasn't dove into a salad wishing it was something else? &#8212; the comment does appear out of character for the star, who has spoken publicly about her own struggles with an eating disorder as a teen. </P><P> </P><P>Using that particular hashtag might have been a poor choice, but it's safe to say Lady Gaga wasn't knowingly making light of eating disorders &#8212; and, otherwise, wasn't she mostly just encouraging exercise and healthy eating? </P><P> </P><P>Gaga tweets often about all sort of less-than-healthful habits, from <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga/status/185590893238165506" target="_blank">drinking </a> ("after 12 margaritas my phone was confiscated") to, well, <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga/status/189573069856194560" target="_blank">other things </a> ("princess xena of xanaxland has lil secrets in her inbox"). Why she is being scrutinized for making an observation about something we already know &#8212; that celebrities engage in intense fitness regimens to meet the unrealistic expectations placed on their appearance &#8212; is kind of a mystery. </P><P> </P><P>But, you know, totally appropriate and necessary reason for outrage, everyone. </P><P> </P><P><i>Sound off on Gaga's #PopSingersDontEat tweet in the comments below!</i></p>

Whitney Houston And Michael Jackson's Deaths: Gone Too Soon

'You will always remember where you were ... when you heard the news,' Simon Cowell says, echoing the sentiments after Jackson's death.
By Tomika L. Anderson

<P>Few people will forget where they were when they heard that the King of Pop, <a href="/news/articles/1614744/michael-jackson-dies-at-50.jhtml">Michael Jackson, had died</a> in June 2009. And now, the same can be said for 1980s and '90s <a href="/news/articles/1679029/whitney-houston-dead.jhtml">Queen of Pop Whitney Houston</a>. </P><P> </P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Celebrities React To Whitney Houston's Passing" id="vid:733106.id:1679030" width="240" height="211"></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>The beloved, long-suffering singer died Saturday inside a Beverly Hills hotel room, hours before she was expected to attend a <a href="/news/articles/1679046/whitney-houston-dies-grammys-clive-davis.jhtml">pre-Grammy Awards party thrown by her longtime mentor Clive Davis</a>. </P><P> </P><P>And while the official cause of death is yet unknown &#8212; what's been speculated so far is that <a href="/news/articles/1679049/whitney-houston-dies-details.jhtml">Houston may have drowned</a> in the bathtub after taking prescription drugs, including Xanax &#8212; given her very public struggle with substance abuse, depression and anxiety over the past decade, it's hard not to conclude that some drug- or alcohol-related accident may have been to blame. </P><P> </P><P>It's much like, most recently, British singer Amy Winehouse and the late, great Michael Jackson before her, who died after taking a fatal cocktail of propofol and two other drugs. Also like Jackson, Houston's sudden death &#8212; at the age of 48 &#8212; has stopped the world in its tracks, an enormous, one-of-a-kind musical flame forever extinguished. </P><P> </P><P>Even Jackson's brother, Jermaine &#8212; who was first introduced to Houston years ago by Clive Davis at the same Beverly Hills Hilton where the singer passed away &#8212; could not help but draw the comparison. In an interview with CNN overnight, he paid tribute to the two fallen musical giants. "They shared a lot of success in the late '80s and they were great friends," he said. "I'm happy and honored to have been a part of their lives." </P><P> </P><P>And oh, what lives they led: Like Jackson &#8212; who died at just 50 years old, after years of struggling with personal demons &#8212; Houston, too, had an intensely profound and everlasting impact on the world of entertainment. </P><P> </P><P>Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson and countless other chart-topping entertainers have all name-checked her as their musical mentor, icon and inspiration: To date, she is one of the best-selling artists of all time, with more than 170 million albums, songs and videos sold. </P><P> </P><P>In her lifetime, Houston achieved what precious few of them have or ever will &#8212; stacking an astonishing 415 awards, including six Grammys, two Emmys, 22 American Music Awards, 30 <i>Billboard</i> Awards. </P><P> </P><P>Her voice, in its prime, was a national treasure. </P><P> </P><P>"X Factor" mastermind Simon Cowell may have summed it up the best: On "Piers Morgan Tonight," he said, "She was one of the greatest voices in our lifetime. Whitney was the number one singer that other singers want to emulate. People like that can't be manufactured. They've either got, it or they don't." </P><P> </P><P>He added, "You will always remember where you were and what you were doing when you heard the news." </P><P> </P><P>Like Michael before her, gone too soon. </P><P> </P><P><center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:733107/cp~id%3D1679030%26vid%3D733107%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A733107%26instance%3Dmtv" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="." flashVars=""></embed></center> </P><P> </P><P><b>MTV News' Sway and James Montgomery will be live from the <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/grammys/">Grammys</a> red carpet tonight starting at 5 p.m. ET to get reactions from music's biggest stars on the death of Whitney Houston. 'Five-Year Engagement': The Reviews Are In!

Critics agree that talented cast of Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Chris Pratt and Alison Brie brings honest script to life.
By Fallon Prinzivalli

Photo: Universal Pictures

"The Five-Year Engagement," starring Jason Segel and Emily Blunt, doesn't adhere to the same predictable romantic-comedy formula audiences are used to seeing. It doesn't open with a comedic meet-cute, and there's no quirky first date: The film follows Violet Barnes (Blunt) and Tom Solomon (Segel) after they're already engaged.

When we meet the characters, their hurdle is how to survive a long engagement due to Violet's budding postdoctoral career.

While some critics believe the movie is a half-hour too long, most agree that the talented cast of comedians brings the honest, insightful script to life. While "Five-Year Engagement" may not be the "Bridesmaids" of 2012, the reviews suggest the film will be a weekend hit.

The Story
"The first 45 minutes or so of 'The Five-Year Engagement,' which Segel wrote with director Nicholas Stoller ('Get Him to the Greek'), pop and zing with both comic fizz and refreshing authenticity. Set to a delicious soundtrack dominated by Van Morrison standards, Tom's and Violet's lives feel more real than the usual Hollywood confections." — Ann Hornaday, Washington Post

The Cast
"This Judd Apatow-produced romantic comedy bares familiar Apatow markings — bawdy humor, crass jokes, coarse language — but steers clear of gross-out gags. Sweetness wins out in the end, and the film gets by on the charm of its leads and a stellar supporting cast, led by 'Parks and Recreation's' Chris Pratt." — Adam Graham, Detroit News

"This seems like another breakthrough for Blunt, who demonstrates an ample gift for physical comedy. She and Segel make an inspired team." — Lou Lumenick, New York Post

"Alison Brie ... with a British accent and a high-octane goofiness that will astonish those who know her best as Trudy Campbell on 'Mad Men' pretty much steals the whole movie as Violet's fertile, impulsive sister." — A.O. Scott, New York Times

The Script
"Every scene in 'The Five-Year Engagement' — virtually every part of every scene — is carefully crafted to introduce an original comic situation, work it and build on it. The movie is a precision instrument with no parts jammed together, just everything smooth and functioning. Take a moment to notice the actual work going on here, and you'll be impressed at the skill. Even then, you'll be dragged back into the picture's spell in less than a minute. ... The screenplay doesn't pump up the stakes; it makes nothing extreme. These are just two people, and this is the drama of the everyday. The filmmakers trust that you'll be interested in what happens to the couple, and in return they keep it honest." — Mike LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

The Final Word
"A scene, late in the film, with [Violet and Suzie] trying to have an adult talk in front of Suzie's kids is a laugh riot, mostly because Suzie speaks in the voice of Elmo while Violet does Cookie Monster. OK, you have to be there, but the moment is memorably hilarious. 'The Five-Year Engagement' is like that, moving in fits and starts, but building a rooting interest in its characters that slaps a goofy smile on your face and keeps it there." — Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
