What do Tina Fey, Oprah Winfrey and a bunch of oversexed vampires have in common? They were all winners at the 22nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards on Saturday night.
This high-profile award recognizes members of the media who encourage "fair, accurate and inclusive" portrayals of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. In addition to previously announced honoree Ricky Martin, here are a few of the winners from the New York portion of the awards ceremony...
True Blood was victorious in the outstanding drama series category. The show not only features gay vampires, but is sometimes interpreted as an allegory about gay rights. Star Denis O'Hare picked up the award on the series' behalf.
30 Rock won for outstanding individual episode for the installment in which guest star James Franco hires a fake girlfriend to hide his true sexual orientation from the world. (The joke was that he was in love with a Japanese body pillow -- but the metaphor was pretty obvious.) Tina Fey accepted the award for the show.
Oprah Winfrey was honored (indirectly) in two categories: outstanding talk show episode for Ricky Martin's coming-out episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, and outstanding magazine article for an O, The Oprah Magazine essay by a woman who unknowingly fell in love with a transgendered man.
Anderson Cooper won the outstanding TV journalism award for his Anderson Cooper 360 series about gay teen suicides.
